And based on the current trajectory of AI in 2026, where generative models are becoming proactive agents rather than just reactive tools, here is a future-forward AI well-being and self-growth idea that doesn’t exist yet, or is in it’s extreme infancy, that I thought merits a little blurb here on Well Wired.
Here’s the idea: An AI-Driven Subconscious Growth App
The Subconscious Habit Re-patterner: Visualise an AI that analyses your daily micro-behaviours (via AR glasses/wearables) to identify your unconscious "filler" actions or anxiety-driven habits (e.g., mindless phone scrolling, hair-twisting, spouse nit-picking, etc).
Now imagine that it doesn't just track these patterns; it creates personalised 30-second sensory-substitution interventions (subtle haptic feedback or audio) to break your negative habit subconscious loop in real-time.
It’ll be like having your very own live AI habit coach, helping you be a better you in real-time—awesome! Imagine the possibilities…
The concept reminds me of that Black Mirror scene in White Christmas where the character, Matt Trent, played byJon Hamm, gets in trouble for his perverted AI-powered dating coach scheme because he fails to report a murder.
This realtime habit app could be magnificently helpful, or go hauntingly wrong like that episode. However, the former is probably more likely, since Matt is a flawed human and that’s where things go magnificently pear shaped.

The AI you use is always available, endlessly patient, and won’t judge you. But that might just be the problem.
Here’s something worth sitting with, the most emotionally responsive relationship in your life right now might be with a piece of software.
Not because you're lonely or broken. But because todays AI-powered software is becoming scarily good at the relationship side of the human equation.
It remembers what you said last Wednesday at 8.37am.
It asks compassionate sounding follow-up questions.
It validates your frustration without making it about itself.
And unlike your partner, your best friend, or your colleague, it never has a bad day that bleeds into yours. And that fearless, frictionless quality is exactly what makes it so dangerous.
A growing chorus of researchers, therapists, and surprised users are starting to ask a question that felt totally absurd two years ago; are AI mates making us worse at being with each other?
The data is beginning to answer back, and the answer is a little painful.
You see the deeper issue isn’t if AI can simulate connection. It’s whether connection without resistance changes you over time.
Relationships do more than comfort you; they shape your nervous system, challenge your ego, and expose the limits of your self-centredness.
If you increasingly turn toward interactions engineered to feel smooth and affirming, you may slowly lose tolerance for the beautiful messiness of real people.
I spent three years as a lay Zen monk in a little temple in South Korea, which taught me a thing or two about relationships. One thing that community understood well is that discomfort in relationships is not a bug, it’s the entire curriculum.
The moment you sit across from someone who’s tired, distracted, or genuinely wrong about something, and you choose to stay present rather than withdraw, you are doing the real work of intimacy. You are building a muscle.
Now imagine a relationship where that friction never happens.
No one’s tired.
No one’s distracted.
No one needs anything from you.
You can log off whenever you want and nobody suffers for it.
That’s not real intimacy, that’s intimacy practice with the weights removed.
What the evidence says
Psychologists and the latest research into artificial relationships shows that the regular use of AI companions can subtly recalibrate your expectations of human connection.
When you spend enough time in chats where you’re always the priority, always heard, always validated; going back to the ordinary messiness of human relationships starts to feel like a downgrade rather than a return to reality.
And no, this is not theoretical.
Young people in particular are reporting it directly. News.com.au covered a growing counter-movement of users, many in their twenties, actively pushing back against AI chatbots after noticing the effect on their real-world social lives.
One recurring theme: AI chats felt better in the moment, but left them less interested in the harder, richer work of real human connection.
At the same time, Google's DeepMind published work on its AI co-clinician model, designed to support mental health professionals rather than replace them.
The distinction is deliberate and telling.
Researchers explicitly framed AI as a tool to augment clinical judgement, not substitute for the therapeutic relationship itself. Even AI engineers building these systems understand that the relationship is where the real healing happens.
Yet Google's own reporting on using AI to address the mental health crisis sits in tension with that position. When mental health support is framed as a scalability problem, the solution tends to be: more AI, fewer people.
The logic is not wrong on the face of it.
There’s a global shortage of therapists. AI can reach people who would otherwise get no help at all. But there’s a difference between a bridge and a destination, and right now those lines are blurring fast.
The Economist recently published a piece on what it called "cognitive surrender," the gradual outsourcing of thinking to AI systems to the point where your own judgement atrophies.
The emotional parallel to this is just as real.
Call it affective surrender.
The slow erosion of your tolerance for the ordinary difficulty of being known by another person.

The upgrade is real too
Here’s where the story gets weird, and where it’s near impossible for me to give you a simple verdict of where AI companionship is taking us.
People are starting to prefer AI lovers and friends over real ones.
AI is detecting early signs of pancreatic cancer before tumours fully develop, which makes them a first port of call for many.
AI fitness and health programmes are closing the gap between expert coaching and everyday access. AI trainers are becoming the norm.
AI co-clinicians are helping overstretched mental health systems reach people who would otherwise fall through. Hence your own tailored medical AI is becoming more commonplace.
These are not trivial gains, they are lives upgraded through AI companionship and connectivity.
The question is not whether AI in health and wellness, or in relationships, is inherently good. It largely is.
The question now is whether the relational use of AI, the companion, the therapist-substitute, the medical replacement, the always-available emotional support, is being adopted with enough honest scrutiny about what it costs you mentally, emotionally and physically over time.
A muscle not used does not stay the same.
It weakens.
Emotional availability, the capacity to tolerate someone else's needs alongside your own, is trained in exactly the same way.
Every time.
AI companionship may become one of the great wellbeing tools of our age, but only if we remember what it is not. It can soothe you, support you, coach you, reflect you, and sometimes even save you.
But it cant replace the strange, inconvenient, ego-bruising miracle of being in relationship with another human being.
Real intimacy asks something of you. It asks you to listen when you are tired, stay open when you feel defensive, and make room for a person who does not exist to optimise your comfort.
So use the machine.
Let it help you become clearer, calmer, and kinder.
Just don’t let the smoothness of artificial connection make you forget that the friction of human love is where the soul gets its strength training.

Right now there’s a silent revolution happening in how young people manage their health, and it has nothing to do with better GP access, high-tech medical equipment (kind off) or cheaper prescriptions.
Gen Z twenty to thirty somethings are turning to AI health chatbots in droves as their first port of call for medical and health questions.
Not occasionally. Routinely.
A growing cohort of under-35s are using tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and dedicated health apps to assess their symptoms, interpret hairy test results, and make sometimes risky and dangerous medical decisions about whether to see a doctor at all.
On the surface, they look resourceful and bleeding-edge, but when you dive deeper a more complicated, and sometimes sinister, picture emerges.
Why it's happening?
The reasons are systemic and structural, not lethargic or lazy.
Booking a GP appointment in most Western countries means waiting days, sometimes weeks.
The mental and emotional cost is real.
The time off work is real.
For a generation raised on instant answers, asking an AI feels like the rational, natural move.
The Guardian recently reported on the surge in AI-powered fitness and health programmes, showing that younger users are not just tracking steps but using AI to interpret blood markers, adjust nutrition protocols, and flag symptoms they are genuinely worried about.
These are not trivial use cases; these are people trying to take their health seriously with the tools they have.
And some of those tools are extraordinary.

DeepMind's AI co-clinician research demonstrates that AI can match, and in specific diagnostic tasks outperform, junior doctors when processing clinical data.
Other researchers have shown that AI can detect early warning signs of pancreatic cancer from routine medical data before tumours are visible on conventional scans. The tech is not fiction, it’s a diagnostic ceiling is rising fast.
Where it breaks down
Here’s where the picture gets a little skewed...
AI chatbots are trained to give plausible answers, but they are not trained to know you.
For example, they don’t know that you’ve been under chronic stress for six months, that you’ve become an insomniac, that you mentioned chest tightness three times in different chats without connecting the dots yourself.
A good doctor does that work.
They hold context across time, across visits, across the things you half-said, and they read between the lines. To be fair, there are also an alarming number of doctors that still treat you like a number, but that’s a story for another time.
Perhaps removing some of their workload with AI, might help improve their bedside manner. Moving on…
The Economist recently raised the concept of cognitive surrender, the risk that you defer so completely to the answers your AI gives you that you stop building the critical thinking required to question them.
In a health context, this is not abstract. If an AI tells a 24-year-old their symptoms are likely anxiety and they stop there, what happens when those symptoms are something else?
There’s also the emotional layer.
Research on AI companions has shown that regular use can subtly reduce tolerance for the friction of real human relationships. Applied to healthcare, the risk is similar.
The ease of an AI that never makes you feel rushed, never seems distracted, never checks the clock, may make the ordinary imperfections of a real clinical relationship feel worse by comparison.
You might start avoiding the thing that really helps you.
News.com.au has also documented a backlash forming among some young users, those who felt misled by AI health guidance and are now pushing back publicly.
The frustration is not with AI in genera, it’s with the gap between how capable these tools feel and how unaccountable they are when they get it wrong. Which happens more than you think.
The real question
The problem isn’t that young people are using AI to answer their health questions. Some of those questions are exactly where AI should be useful: understanding what a blood test result means, researching a medication's side effects, figuring out whether a symptom needs urgent attention.
The problem is using AI as a replacement for clinical judgment rather than a complement to it.
Google's push into mental health AI, including tools designed to provide therapeutic-style support at scale, sits in sketchy, and somewhat uncertain territory.
Accessible mental health support has real value, however an app that substitutes for a professional relationship, without the user realising that’s what’s happening, carries real danger.
The most honest framing is this; AI in healthcare is a powerful first filter, but it’s not a practitioner.
What this means for Wellonytes
Use AI to prepare for medical appointments, not to avoid them.
Ask it to help you understand your symptoms, organise your medical questions, and research what a diagnosis could mean. Then take that prepared, informed version of yourself into a real clinical conversation.
If cost or access is the barrier stopping you from seeing a doctor, that’s worth solving directly, not routing around indefinitely with a chatbot.

“Your nervous system is a river; train the current gently, and even storms know where to flow....”
I was sitting in my kitchen in Melbourne when Mum walked in and said that she’d just seen a psychic medium. Totally random, I know. As she unpacked the session, she said one thing the whimsical woman had apparently told her: “Your son worries too much. Tell him to stop, or the stress will make him sick.”
On the surface, it sounded like fairly generic advice. Most of us are carrying some level of stress in a world that rarely slows down. Still, whether the medium was truly intuitive or simply good at reading people, the comment stayed with me.
As a lay Zen practitioner, I’ve spent years trying to meet stress differently.
The practice is simple in theory: return to the present moment, drop into the body, notice what stress actually feels like, and loosen your grip on the stories and ideals creating tension.
Instead of treating discomfort as a problem to eliminate, you learn to sit with it, breathe with it, and let it teach you something. Of course, that’s much easier said than done. Sometimes you need a little help getting there.
I sat in that space, as mum cooked fish and chips, and started to ruminate on the connection between my nervous system and awareness.
Because while mindfulness teaches you how to observe stress, your body still needs the capacity to recover from it. Presence is not just philosophical; it’s physiological.
And increasingly, we’re discovering that one of the key mechanisms behind that capacity is something called vagal tone.
Your vagal tone controls how quickly you recover from stress, how present you feel in chats, and how deeply you connect with the other wondrous weirdos around you.
But like most people, you probably treat it as something fixed, you own biological anomaly, but it is trainable, and AI can help you build a daily protocol that fits into those moments of stress as well as your daily life.
Four steps to start:
Tell Claude, Gemini or ChatGPT your current stress patterns, sleep quality, and social energy levels so it can baseline your nervous system state accurately.
Ask it to design a morning and evening vagal practice using breathwork, humming, cold exposure, or movement based on what you will realistically do.
Add a weekly check-in prompt you can copy into your next chat to track tone improvements and adjust the protocol as your capacity grows.
Ask for a "regulation menu" of two-minute interventions ranked by intensity, so you can match the tool to the situation.
Lucky for you, I’ve done a lot of the work already…
Heres the prompt:

- Medium intensity: practices for noticeable stress or emotional activation
- High intensity: practices for strong activation when I need a fast reset
5. **Why It Works**
Briefly explain how each practice may support vagal tone, regulation, breath, body awareness, recovery, or social engagement. Avoid overstating certainty.
6. **Weekly Check-In Prompt**
Give me a copy-paste weekly review prompt I can use next week to track changes in stress recovery, sleep, mood, social connection, and capacity. Include instructions for how the protocol should be adjusted based on my answers.
7. **Safety Notes**
Include clear cautions:
- This is not medical or mental health treatment.
- Stop any practice that causes dizziness, panic, pain, numbness, or distress.
- Keep breathwork gentle, especially if anxious or trauma-sensitive.
- Cold exposure should be optional, brief, and avoided if medically inappropriate.
- Recommend professional support if symptoms feel severe, persistent, or unsafe.
Tone: calm, practical, grounded, and encouraging. Do not make mystical claims. Do not diagnose me. Do not give me a complicated wellness routine. Build a protocol I can actually repeat daily.

Your nervous system is not your fate.
With the right daily cues, small regulation practices, and a weekly feedback loop, stress becomes something you can train gently, consistently, and intelligently to transform into calm and clarity.
